Calling Young Researchers in Medellín: Mini Fellowship

Are you a young and aspiring researcher residing in the city of Medellín? The Edgelands Institute is excited to announce a unique opportunity for three talented individuals to conduct an independent research project that will shed light on the effects of the digitization of security on safety, the social fabric of Medellín, and its urban social contract. This is your chance to make a meaningful contribution to the understanding of the ever-evolving intersection between security, cities, and digital technology.
The research project will take place from August to October 2023, allowing researchers to delve deep into the complexities of how technology is shaping urban life and safety in Medellín. As part of the cohort of local researchers, you will also join the global fellowship cohort at the Edgelands Institute, fostering connections with researchers from various corners of the world.
If you are selected for this exciting opportunity, we expect you to commit to the research project and contribute actively to its success. Here are the activities and deliverables you will be responsible for:
Activities:
- Submit a detailed work schedule
- Socialization of progress
- Attend agreed meetings
Deliverables:
- Policy Brief (4000 to 4500 words)
- Your research findings will be presented in the form of a comprehensive Policy Brief. This document typically includes five sections: an executive summary, introduction, statement of the research question, discussion and analysis of the results, and conclusions with recommendations. Tailor the structure to best suit your research proposal's requirements
- Dissemination content (video or podcast recording)
- Research exhibition at the Institute's closing event, set to take place in November 2023 (date to be confirmed)
This call is extended to professionals in Medellín with a specialization or master's degree and a background in security, cities, and digital technology. Additionally, the ability to communicate your research work proficiently in English will be considered an asset, as English serves as the working language of the Institute.
Remuneration:
The Edgelands Institute will offer a remuneration of U$600 for each selected researcher.

El Instituto Edgelands busca tres investigadores jóvenes residentes en la ciudad de Medellín para llevar a cabo un proyecto de investigación independiente. El objetivo de la investigación es ayudarnos a ampliar la comprensión sobre los efectos de la digitalización de la seguridad en el tejido social de la ciudad y el contrato social urbano en Medellín Se recomienda para la propuesta explorar los reportes del trabajo del Instituto en la ciudad. La investigación se llevará a cabo entre agosto y octubre del 2023.
Las personas seleccionadas harán parte de una cohorte de investigadores locales que se conectará con la cohorte del fellowship global del Instituto Edgelands. Esta convocatoria es la oportunidad para que investigadores jóvenes de Medellín se conecten con investigadores de otros lugares del mundo dedicados a investigar la intersección entre la seguridad, las ciudades y la tecnología digital.
En caso de ser seleccionado/a, el/la investigar/investigadora se compromete a cumplir con las siguientes actividades y entregables:
Actividades:
- Presentar un cronograma de trabajo detallado.
- Socialización de avances con el equipo del Instituto Edgelands..
- Asistir a las reuniones pactadas entre el equipo del Instituto y los fellows.
Entregables:
- Documento tipo Policy Brief (entre 4000 y 4500 palabras).
- Típicamente un documento de Policy Brief contiene cinco secciones: 1. resumen ejecutivo, 2. introducción, 3. planteamiento del asunto a investigar, 4. discusión y análisis de los resultados, y 5. conclusiones y recomendaciones. La estructura del documento puede variar de acuerdo con las necesidades de la propuesta de resultados
- Contenido de divulgación (grabación de un video o podcast)
- Exposición de la investigación en el evento de clausura del Instituto en Medellín (noviembre de 2023, fecha por confirmar).
Invitamos a profesionales de la ciudad con título de especialización o maestría y experiencia laboral o investigativa en seguridad, ciudades y tecnología digital a presentarse a la convocatoria. La habilidad de socializar en inglés el trabajo de investigación será valorada positivamente (dado que el inglés es el idioma de trabajo del Instituto). Envíe sus solicitudes antes del 13 de agosto.
